Acclimatization

In order to survive in an interior environment, quality foliage plants should be conditioned and shade-grown in nurseries prior to their shipment to an installation site. Each plant should receive individual attention from the acclimatization at an interior plantscape firm’s holding facility where light levels are further reduced until it is installed in the office, mall or home. Many plantscape companies have facilities which are equipped with time-controlled high intensity lights. Temperature and humidity controls and a fertilizing system which ensures that the plants will be prepared for their final move to the job site. Each plant is also pruned and hand cleaned before delivery to the customer.

Transportation

Plants should be transported from the nursery to the plantscaping company and/or job site, to ensure that no plant receives an excessive amount of heat or cold.

Plant Selection

Working with the interior designer, the landscape architect and the client, the interior plantscape specialist acts as a consultant in the design process. Understanding necessary light levels and environmental conditions, the plantscape professional should offer the customer a variety of plant choices. The interiorscaper should also recommend and should provide a layout of planting materials. Careful plant selection is necessary to save the client money and unnecessary plant material changes at the time of installation or thereafter.

Installation

The interior plantscape firm should handle all elements of the plant installation, which includes the delivery to the site of all plants, containers and growing media and the placement of plants in their containers, watering, mulching and final pruning.

Maintenance

To assure continued consistency and quality of plant material it is important that the client obtain a maintenance agreement from the professional interior plantscape contractor. The maintenance agreement will generally include feeding, watering, cleaning, pruning and spraying of all foliage. Replacement of plant material will also be made when necessary.

Selecting an Interior Plantscape Professional

It is essential that one select the proper interior plantscape contractor. Every effort should be made to pre-qualify the contractor before inviting them to submit a proposal. A pre-proposal conference can be a valuable aid to help insure that all proposals are submitted on the same specifications. By following this procedure, the customer is more likely to receive competitive prices. Items that should be checked before selecting an interior plantscape contractor include:

References – Check carefully with others who have used the contractor. Determine if the projects are similar in size and quality.

Experience – Determine if the contractor has the horticultural capabilities necessary to execute the plan.

Personnel – Check to see whether the contractor employs people qualified in the areas which they work.

Business Ethics – be convinced that the contractor must have the ability to listen to and understand your needs and your priorities and to determine whether or not he can meet them.

Professionalism

In addition to evaluating the professional capabilities of an interior plantscaping company, the client might wish to see with what national associations an interior plantscape contractor is associated. One such organization is the Interior Plantscape Contractors of America. The association provides continuing education to plantscape professionals and presents awards to outstanding projects and offers to the professional plantscaper the opportunity to subscribe to a code of ethics and the opportunity to work more closely with other design professionals.

Measuring Plant Height and Width

Plants are measured from the base of the growing container to mean foliage. Outstanding branches are not measured. In like manner, the plant is measured across mean foliage, not including random outstanding branches. In measuring cane, height is once again measured from the base of the growing container to the mean foliage top.

Light Levels

Light level is perhaps the single most important factor in the plant’s continued health and vitality. This chart lists the most popular interior foliage plants in use in plantscapes today. Each photograph is color coded according to the amount of light it needs to sustain itself properly

High Light     |     Medium Light     |     Low Light

Containers

A wide variety of containers exist to accommodate every design need. Containers may be made of plastic, clay, chrome, fiberglass, ceramic and other man-made materials. Many finishes are available from brushed aluminum to basketry to hemp. A container is as much a part of the design as the foliage and should be chosen with equal care.
